On Monday 19th, it was continuous celebration of three decades of Road Safety Management in Nigeria in an open house seminar with the Theme: FRSC IN THE NEXT DECADE at Nigerian Air force Conference Centre, Abuja.

The event rounded off with dinner and awards night to deserving members.

The birth of Federal Road Safety Corps 30 years ago was a result of the continuous rise in the number of deaths recorded on the roads. It was established to checkmate the occurrences of road traffic crashes decimating the lives of road users and the desperate answer to reduce accidents and the upsurge of deaths and injuries was the establishment of the agency.

FRSC was an offshoot from the Nigerian Army who created awareness on road safety through its National Road Safety Commission under the supervision of Federal Ministry of Works. It was not enough as there was upsurge of deaths across the nation at alarming rate.

It was therefore expedient for the establishment of FRSC on 18 February 1988 with few officers and men as well as conscripting NYSC members who joined in 1989 to be the solution to road crashes. The first operation headquarters was at Osuntokun Street, Ibadan and later moved to Gbagada Lagos.

Their function was to prevent and minimize road traffic crashes, educate motorists and other members of the public on road safety; they liaise with agencies and groups to engage in road Safety to prevent crashes on the highways providing prompt attention and care to victims of road crashes amongst others.

Ever since FRSC, has grown beyond the few young crop of officers to over 20 thousand highly motivated and dedicated performance driven personnel who have a culture of continuous innovation and internal efforts to ensuring semblance to road safety and reduction of traffic accidents.

They have moved from operating on the initial five zonal commands to 12 zonal commands, 36 sector commands and FCT, 199 Unit Commands, 34 out posts, 41 Zebra points and 27 roadside clinics.

Recognition and awards were given to some of the pioneer Staff who are still in the system, among the recipients were Dr. Kayode Olagunju, Ayobami Omiyale, Dele Kumapayi and Kingsley Agomoh amongst others.
