RAS KIMONO

The greatest Nigerian reggae musician has been reportedly dead at the lagoon hospital ikoyi after a brief illness. Ras kimono ruled the reggae scene in the late eighties to the nineties with one hit album after another.

As a social crusader, he used his music as a medium to fight oppression. His philosophy was consistent by speaking out the ills he perceived. He was inspiring while entertaining using blend of Africa and patoas as his stylee. Indeed his Rumba stylee appealed to the old and the young spreading his fame all over the continent and beyond. He played in major cities in several countries all over the world.

His first album UNDER PRESSURE, which debuted in 1989 won a gold disc award. WHAT’S GWAN? Another hit won him a double platinum. Others are RUN FI COVER, ORACLE OF JAH and STILL ARISE.

He was reggae artiste of the year, artiste of the year, while other awards were album of the year as well as song of the year.

The great legend, Ras kimono was born Ukeleke Onwubuya on May 9 1958 and was delta state.

The advocate of social change died on 9th of June 2018 weeks after he celebrated his 60th birthday.
