The ECOWAS Chairmanship is held by the heads of State or Government of the member countries chosen on rotating basis for a year tenure. Former Nigerian President Buhari occupied the position in 2018 to 2019. The position does not confer executive powers but the Chairman plays a strategic role in conflict resolution, advocacy and liaises with the president of the ECOWAS Commission, the day- to -day management and implementation of ECOWAS policies and decisions.

President Tinubu said that democracy would be taken seriously, even though democracy is tough it is the form of Government. Tinubu received the handover documents from President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau who is the outgoing Chairman.
