LAGOS WORKERS ADOPT SHIFT OPERATIONS DUE TO FUEL HIKE

Civil servants in Lagos state have resorted to shift operations to cushion the effect of fuel hike. The shift is one day one and one day off to relieve staff of financial stress. It is also noticed that most private vehicle owners have decided to board public transportation to their offices. Consequently, most of the erstwhile gridlock often seen in the city metropolis has reduced drastically. Lagos metropolis looks ghost-like compared to the sea of cars that usually besieged the roads on daily basis. Commuters have resulted to trekking to their various destinations due to the inability to cope with the rising cost of transport fares. Fares have risen by 300%, a trip of N200 has risen to N600, while a trip of N100 have risen to N250 or N300. For example, a journey from Ikotun to CMS has risen from N1000 to N3000. Some of the workers have resorted to joining staff busses or alternative commercial transportation like BRT. On the other hand, commercial buses and taxis have recorded a considerable drop in patronage.
