OAU STUDENTS PROTEST FEE HIKE

Students of OAU Ile-Ife staged a protest on Tuesday against the hike in school fees and demanded a 50% reduction in the new charges. The Urged the Federal Government to allocate the funds from subsidy removal towards Education instead of allowing an increase in school fees. They called for the implementation of the original proposed instalment payment the Vice-Chancellor of the university promised.

Daily post reported that the students shut the institution’s gate blocking access to the University. Students, staff and other stakeholders were stranded at the campus gate.

Vanguard reports that the students carried placards with different inscriptions such as ‘’ Education is bleeding, no need celebrating Independence’’ ‘’Let the poor breath, fees must fall’’ ‘’my parents are poor, can’t afford exorbitant fees’’ etc.

The leadership of the Great Ife Students’ Union, Abbas Akinremi was reported to have disclosed that the students would not stop disrupting activities in the school if management refused to reduce the new school fees by 50% against the 15% reduction.

The Public relations officer of the Institution, Abiodun Olanrewaju has disclosed that the University as not foreclosed negotiation with the students’ leadership but urged them to be peaceful rather than disruptive in dialogue and activities.
