SUSPECTED CASES OF MENINGITIS IN 24 STATES

Nigeria has reported a confirmation of 287 cases out of 2707-suspected cases of meningitis, which involves 183 deaths. This was reported from 130 local Government areas in 24 states including Abuja. This is from October 22 to July 2-2023.Meningococcl meningitis according to Nigeria centre for Disease control and prevention is transmitted from person to person through droplets of respiratory and throat secretion by asymptomatic carriers. The average incubation period is four days but can range between two to ten days. Long and prolonged contact with an infected person or living with a carrier facilitates the spread of the disease. Twenty four states have reported cases of suspected cases of Meningitis and five to fourteen year age group are mostly affected. Fifty five persons of the suspected cases were males with ninety eight of all suspected cases are from Jigawa with a total of 1508 cases. Other states are Yobe 654 cases, Katsina 177, Bauchi 123, Zamfara 53, Gombe 26 while Kano and Sokoto have 10 cases. The NCDC however said it would continue to support affected states with essential response commodities.
