THE NIGERIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION PROTESTS DEATH OF COLLEAGUE

The Lagos State government on Wednesday had set up a panel of Inquiry to look into the circumstances surrounding the death of a medical officer undergoing houseman ship who died when an elevator crashed at the general hospital Odan, Lagos Island on Tuesday.

The lady Doctor, Vwaere Diaso was in the elevator on her way to get her food from a dispatch rider when the incident happened. She was rushed to the emergency ward where she was confirmed dead. Protests immediately rocked the hospital as her colleagues besieged the premises and grounded all activities by shutting the hospital main gate, the health service commission gate and the Lagos island maternity gate. They expressed displeasure over the death of their colleague and accused the management of negligence. On many occasions, the elevator had failed. It was faulty and the management knew because several complaints have been made about the faulty elevator. Sometimes those inside the elevator had to use their hands to close the doors. They carried placards with inscriptions such as ‘’I don’t want to die’’’Doctors lives matter’’ ‘’the system failed you, Diaso’’ and ‘’here is Vwaere Diaso, she didn’t have to die for us to get it right’’’ Justice for Vwaere’’. Vwaere was still conscious after the incident with fractures and was taken to the emergency where there was another delay, which was lack of blood. The country failed her.

The state Chairman of NMA Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu and Secretary Ismail Ajibowo directed all doctors working in the three Government hospitals on Lagos Island to commence on indefinite strike action until the investigations are completed and Justice is served. This is as a mark of respect for their dead colleague. Only emergency services would be rendered for the next five days as they scaled down activities.

Doctor Diaso was said to have just two weeks to complete her houseman ship.
