POLICE TAKE OVER UNILAG GATE AS STUDENTS PROTEST FEE HIKE

Students demand release of arrested colleagues and reduction of fees in protest.

Students were prevented from entering the campus today Wednesday in University of Lagos by the police who took over the University gate. The police were joined by the University Security personnel and men of Nigeria Security and civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Admission seekers were also turned back at the gate which was locked. The students were dispersed by policemen with teargas canister but students later regrouped to move towards the gate but were prevented from moving closer by policemen who cordoned the gate. Balogun Oladeji Ibrahim the President-elect of the Faculty of Education Students Association who spoke on behalf of the students, accused the Area Commander of ordering his men to shoot at them and that he also arrested some of their colleagues. He said the students would continue to lay siege at the campus until those arrested, Femi Adeyeye and Phillip Olatinwo were released.
