NIGERIAN STUDENT DIES IN CAIRO ENROUTE LONDON

Meshioye Remilekun Toyosi a Nigerian Student from Lagos to London on board Egypt Air died at a hospital in Cairo after she fell sick mid-flight. The family is seeking answers and assistance in repatriating her body to Nigeria. The ill-fated journey began on Monday when Meshioye departed the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. Her Older sister, Mrs. Olufunmilola Olaniyi -Alabi narrated that the family had tried to call the airline’s customer care and all other phone details on their website without response and when the call was answered it was quickly cut off. The one time that a man answered the call that they were put through to the Egypt Air Regional Office in London Office, the office said they were not aware of what happened and dont have information to share. They family then contacted the agent who sold ticket to her and the agent sent proof that she did not board the plane going to Heathrow from Cairo. At that point efforts were intensified to get in touch with Egypt Air.

The regional manager in London Office made some calls on Thursday afternoon to their Cairo office. she later informed the family that Remilekum Meshioye fell sick on the plane and on landing in Cairo was rushed to the Hospital in Town where she later died. Efforts to obtain further information on how she died was not successful. Nigerian Emassy has been informed and they were the ones that should have contacted the family. But she called the Nigerian Consular (Mr, Saliu Agraza) who responded that Egypt Air only informed them on Tuesday that Remi was dead and handed over her body to them but did not have any other information or any contact of her relatives. She was of the strong opinion that the airline should have contacted the passenger’s next of kin instead of them struggling to get information, which the airline was yet to provide as of press time.

She said Egypt air said that only Agraza being the Nigerian Consular would be able to write and demand what happened at the plane, at the airport and requested for all her things and documents that are in their possession, including the CCTV footage in the plane and the airport. She said she is of the opinion that the airline was hiding the truth of what happened and dont want to take responsibility for what happened. she demands her body to be returned to Nigeria by the airline at their expense and return all her luggage to Lagos where she boarded the plane on Monday 4.

Punch reports that a source contacted who was a top ranking officer with the airline spoke in anonymity since the airline was yet to issue an official statement disclosed that the deceased was sick on the flight and was reportedly transferred to the hospital in Cairo. When she died the airline informed the Nigerian consulate in Cairo to take steps on what was required to repatriate her body to Nigeria.

The Family is demanding explanations from the Nigerian authorities, including Ministry if Foreign Affairs to shed light on events leading to the death of Remi.
