NSIB BEGINS PROBE ON INCIDENT INVOLVING UNITED NIGERIA AIRLINES

Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has begun an investigation into a serious incident involving an Embraer ERJ145 with registration number 5N-BWY belonging to United Nigeria Airlines.

Punch Newspaper reports that the Bureau noted that the incident occurred around 6.33pm on September 8 2023 with 51 passengers and four crew members on board. According to the General Manager, Public Affairs, Tunji Oketunbi’s statement signed by Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, James Odaudu, the aircraft skidded off upon landing on runway 18R of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. There were no injury nor fatality recorded.

The aircraft skidded off the runway while trying to land during the heavy downpour on Friday night. The plane tire lost grip on the wet surface according to the Head of Corporate Communications of the airlines, Achilleus –Chud Uchegbu who said the flight had successfully operated and landed at its destination after it arrived from Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri.

The bureau is a multimodal investigation agency charged with the mandate to investigate transportation accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria with the aim of identifying the probable causes and proffer safety recommendations that can prevent reoccurrence.
