UNILAG SLASHES FEES AFTER NANS MEETING WITH VC

A statement made available to the PUNCH on Friday 15 September, 2023 revealed that the University has announced the reduction of its school fees after meeting the representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students on Thursday.

The statement read ” Authorities of the University of Lagos led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folashade Oginsola, on Thursday, September 14, 2023 had a meeting with the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Comrade Usman Barambu accompanied by top officers of the Association and UNILAG faculty leaders drawn from the nine faculties of the University and collage of medicine.”

Barambu at the commencement of the meeting highlighted the demands put forth by the students which include reversal of Obligatory fees, Hotel fees and reinstatement of Students’ Union Government in UNILAG.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that the aim of the University was to deliver quality Education to its students regardless of class, tribe or creed.

“After careful evaluation of the issues raised by the students and management, the following consensus was reached at the meeting: Utility Charges for all categories of students was reduced from N20,000 to N15,000

Obligatory fees for new undergraduates was reduced from N126,325.00 to N116,325.00 for courses without Lab/Studio.

Returning students from N100,750 to N80,750 for courses without Lab/Studio

N140,250 to N120,250 for courses with Lab/Studio

N190,250 to N170,250 for Medical students/Pharmacy students and students in Health Professions.

Convocation fee to be paid by all final year students from N30,000 to N27,000

Hostel fees for Undergraduates in Akoka and Yaba Campuses was reduced from N90,000 to N43,000

Idi-Araba Campus from N120,000 to N65,000 and Sodeinde hall from N250,000 to N135,000.

In July, UNILAG authorities announced a rise in tuition fees for new and returning students citing current economic conditions as the reasons behind the decision which prompted the students to take to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the raised tuition fees announced by the school management.
