WIFE OF ELECTROCUTED BEDC STAFF CRIES OUT FOR JUSTICE

Helen Izekor who is the wife of Augustine Izekor the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) electrocuted last Thursday at Evbodia Community in Oredo Local Government, Edo State is in nightmare. She is a shadow of herself since her husband’s death and questioned where she would start from.  She asks whom will she run to and claimed that her life is finished because there is no one to run to.

She narrated her ordeal that her husband called to inform that he would soon be home that afternoon and she rushed to the kitchen to prepare food, eagerly awaiting his arrival. The seconds turned to minutes and the minutes turned to hours but there was no sign of him coming home. She called him several times because he does not stay out late. She managed to go to bed trying to force herself to sleep which didn’t work. In the morning, she was called by her pastor’s wife to visit a place. She said she got dressed and followed her only to be informed at the terminus that her husband was dead. Her husband, it was gathered embarked on an operation to restore electricity to Evbodia Community when one of his colleagues reportedly called the control room for power outage as work was in progress only for the another member of the team to place a counter call to the same control room for power restoration while he was still working with his tools. The spanner, screwdriver, plier and others turned out to be his undoing. It was gathered that as soon as Izekor was knocked down, some of his colleagues reportedly fled the scene without informing the management or rushing the victim to the hospital for immediate medications, thereby raising suspicion s about his death. After some time, one of them went back to the scene to find the victim battling for life. He and some sympathizers rushed him to Faith Mediplex hospital, Benin. He was taken to the hospital around 4pm according to one of the matrons on duty who said he was attended to promptly and ensured the proper emergency steps were taken.  She claimed the hospital tried their best but lamented that he gave up around 11pm in the presence of his sister. One of the daughters of the deceased lamented that her father always complained that a colleague was not happy with him in the office. She said her father said the man threatened him, as he was new in the station, couldn’t be their head. She said her father was in the midst of colleagues who wanted him to die.

The Guardian gathered that the family went to the deceased office at Etete but the overzealous security men at the entrance quickly locked the gate which infuriated the friends and family members before a management staff came to calm the situation.

The spokesperson for BEDC, Mrs. Evelyn Gbiwon confirmed the incident. She said ‘’ we heard about his death this morning and we are trying to gather information about the circumstances that led to his death’’.

It was gathered that those who went for the operations with the deceased have been arrested.
