YULETIDE: FRSC OPENS UP ENUGU-ONITSHA HIGHWAY TO EASE TRAFFIC

PUNCH reports that ahead of the festive period, MTN Nigeria is partnering the Federal Road Safety Corps to temporarily open the Amawbia, Anambra State sections of the partially completed Enugu-Onitsha dual carriage way. MTN is the financier of the dual carriageway that connects Anambra and other South-East states. Dr. Reginald Facah, who is the Coordinator of MTN community Liaison Initiative said that the road was opened to ease traffic flow for South-East commuters traveling during the yuletide. He said there has been a high influx of traffic along the Onitsha carriageway that results in gridlock because the yuletide season adding that the essence of opening the road is to decongest the traffic to make traveling seamless for road users.

He was quoted as saying that the road would be temporarily opened partially completed section not because the entire project is ready but because of December and Christmas have been unimaginable suffering on the parts of commuters and drivers on the same road.

The Senior manager of Sales, MTN, Emmanuel Okereke said the organization is excited to partner with the Federal Government on road infrastructure tax credit scheme to complete the rehabilation of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. He said that the road does not only connect Enugu and Anambra but its a gateway to the rest of the country and Africa. He said the road would also be the pride of the South-east people and Nigerians in general.

The Sector Commander of FRSC, Anambra, Adeoye Irelewuyi on his remarks said that on festive periods, the section of the road always experienced very serious traffic jam at the slightest obstruction to traffic flow usually causes a pile-up in both directions. He said it was a great joy and relief to the command since it would ease the traffic jam usually experienced at the Amawbai flyover and underpass as well as reduce road traffic crashes on the stretch.

He appealed to the people of the state and road users to always exercise patience during and after the yuletide seasons.

Patricia Igwebuike, the Anambra State Commissioner for Transport lauded MTN for their timely intervention and encouraged road users to use the road with caution during the yuletide season.
